Sweden 3-2 Poland Sweden came out on top in dramatic fashion as substitute Viktor Claesson scored a 93rd-minute winner to secure the top spot in Group E of Euro 2020. Things seemed to be going well for the favourites in Saint Petersburg as Emil Forsberg netted twice to put the Swedes up 2-0. Forsberg opened the scoring in the 2nd minute itself before adding another just before the hour mark. However, Poland were not ready to back down without a fight. Robert Lewandowski finally found his scoring boots as he pulled one back for the Polish less than 2 minutes after Forsberg created some daylight between the two sides. Lewandowski thought he had secured a draw for his nation in the 84th minute when he found the equaliser. Although that would not have been enough to see his country through to the knockout stage, Poland were playing for pride. Sweden had other ideas, however. Claesson made sure of the three points for Sweden right at the death to set up a last-16 tie against Ukraine in Glasgow on 29 June. The Swedes made it to the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia so this success is not surprising. They have looked like a solid outfit and have coped well without Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Spain earned their first win at Euro 2020 as they hammered Slovakia to finish as Group E runners-up at Euro 2020. La Furia Roja will face Croatia in the Round of 16 as teams get ready for the knockout stages. Luis Enrique’s side head into the pre-quarterfinals looking in fine form as they demolished a Slovakia team that was far from their best. Aymeric Laporte, Pablo Sarabia and Ferran Torres all scored for Spain at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville. The other two goals were own goals that begun with one bizarre case involving Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The Newcastle keeper had earlier saved a penalty from Alvaro Morata but he experienced the paradigm shift in emotion shortly after. He punched the ball into his own net after Sarabia’s shot hit the crossbar and ballooned up into the air. Juraj Kucka also found himself on the wrong end of the scoresheet as he bundled the ball over his own line from close range to give Spain a 5-0 victory. In a dominating performance by the three-time European Championship winners, Alvaro Morata was extremely poor and his form has been a major concern for the Spaniards. He has squandered several opportunities this season and they need him to start firing. Gareth Southgate’s decision to stay put with Sterling in England’s starting line-up seems to have paid dividends once again England bagged three points to stay unbeaten in the group stage of Euro 2020. England started off in the perfect manner with Sterling heading home at the far post following a deflected cross from Jack Grealish who was a menace. Grealish and Saka were both given starts for England. While there was no surprise in Grealish being picked, many were shocked and a bit triggered by Saka being included. Especially given that Jadon Sancho was yet to feature in this year’s tournament. However, Saka was one of the best players on the pitch and looked threatening on the right flank. Manchester United captain Harry Maguire also made a comeback as he managed to play the complete 90 minutes alongside John Stones in central defence. England have only managed to score two goals in their three games with both falling to Raheem Sterling.
