UEFA scraps away goal rule in all its competitions

The away goals rule in European club football is going to be scrapped from the start of the 2021/22 season, the UEFA has confirmed. The away goal rule has been used since 1965 and favoured the team that scored the most away goals in the case of drawn two-legged ties. All ties that finish level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will go into extra time and potentially penalties, regardless of which team scored more away goals. “It is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight,” said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. UEFA’s club competitions committee made the proposal last month in May and it has now been approved by the body’s executive committee. Rule to be implemented for all competitions This means that all games in the upcoming Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League and even the Women’s Champions League will all be played with the new rule adopted. UEFA believes there is now a smaller gap between the number of home and away wins as well as home and away goals scored in European competitions. European football’s governing body says that all of these changes are due to a number of factors. These include much better pitch quality around the continent, improved stadium infrastructure and new technologies being adopted such as the video assistant referee (VAR). “The impact of the...

Nuno Espirito Santo to be the next Tottenham manager?

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the leading contender to become the new Tottenham Hotspur manager as per reports. The Portuguese mastermind decided to vacate his role at Wolves after the club had a rocky Premier League season. Tottenham, on the other hand, sacked Jose Mourinho on 19th April 2021 right before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. Mourinho has been signed as AS Roma’s new manager. He replaces Paulo Fonseco who was originally linked with a move to London, however, the talks fell through and it does not seem likely to go through. Gennaro Gattuso also went out of consideration amid fans protesting the Italian’s appointment after he left Napoli’s head coaching role. Nuno has been linked with the vacant managerial jobs at two other Premier League clubs as well. He is the front-runner for the Everton job that became vacant following Carlo Ancelotti choosing to head back to manage Real Madrid. Crystal Palace is the other Premier League club that Nuno has been linked with this summer. Paraguay beat Chile to secure their spot in the quarterfinals as they moved into second place in Group A of the 2021 Copa America. Paraguay won 2-0 thanks to goals from Braian Samudio and Miguel Almiron in a game that they needed at least a draw to qualify for the quarterfinals. This result has sealed the top four from Group A of the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America. Bolivia have been eliminated without even kicking off their final game against group leaders Argentina. They will be fighting for nothing but pride in their final group stage match as Argentina will look to end on a high going into the knockout stages. Miguel Almiron was the star of the show as he not only scored Paraguay’s second goal but also assisted the first. Samudio opened the scoring after 33 minutes in a game that Chile struggled to establish any sort of rhythm in. Almiron sent in a teasing cross that Samudio pounced on from a corner kick to give them the lead. Almiron then converted from the spot in the 58th minute to put the result to bed. Paraguay are now just a point behind Argentina in Group A of the 2021 Copa America. They just need to avoid defeat against Uruguay to ensure a second-place finish in the...
